Maakhir: A Short-Lived State in Somalia
Maakhir was a self-declared state located in the northern part of Somalia. It was created by local leaders who wanted more control over their region. Even though it called itself a state, most countries around the world did not see it as an independent nation. Instead, they considered it part of Somalia.
What Was Maakhir?
An "unrecognized state" is like a group of people in a certain area who say they are independent, but other countries don't agree. Maakhir was one such area. It had its own flag, coat of arms, and even a president, but it was still seen as part of Somalia by the international community.
Where Was Maakhir Located?
Maakhir was in the northern part of Somalia, in a region called Sanaag. This area is known for its beautiful coastlines along the Gulf of Aden. The capital city of Maakhir was Badhan. The region was mostly rural, meaning it had many small towns and villages rather than large cities.
Why Was Maakhir Formed?
Maakhir was formed on July 1, 2007. The people in this area felt that the existing regional government of Puntland (another part of Somalia) was not protecting their interests enough. They also wanted to manage their own resources, like the valuable frankincense trees found in the region. So, they decided to declare their own state to gain more control and security.
Who Led Maakhir?
The leader of Maakhir was its president, Jibril Ali Salad. He was chosen by the local leaders to head the new administration. His job was to try and build up the new state and represent its people.
The End of Maakhir
Maakhir's existence was quite short. It dissolved on January 11, 2009. After about a year and a half, the leaders of Maakhir decided to rejoin the Puntland administration. This happened because they faced many challenges, including a lack of money and ongoing disputes with other groups. By rejoining Puntland, they hoped to find more stability and support for their region.
