Puntland, officially known as the Puntland State of Somalia, is a special region in northeastern Somalia. It's like a state within a country. Its main town is Garoowe in the Nugal province.
In 1998, leaders in Puntland said their territory was an autonomous state. This means it governs itself. However, other countries still see it as an autonomous region that is part of Somalia.
