Mabel Pye's Early Life and Art Training
Mabel Pye was born in Box Hill, Australia, in 1894. Her parents were Alice Eleanor Noar and William Edward Pye. Mabel had a younger sister named Hazel, who also became an artist. Their father even built a special art studio for them at their home in Surrey Hills.
Mabel's family enjoyed being part of a local theatre group called 'The Benwerrin Players'. When she was 19, Mabel had an adventure when she needed to be rescued while swimming at Moon Bay.
Mabel studied art at the famous National Gallery School. She learned drawing from 1912 to 1915. Then, she focused on painting from 1915 to 1919. Some of her teachers included Adelaide Perry and Bernard Hall.
Mabel Pye's Art Career
Mabel Pye created many different types of art. She often used watercolors and a printing method called linocuts. Her art included:

Her artworks were known for their bright colors and strong lines.

Mabel Pye was especially famous for her paintings of ballet scenes. Russian student dancers would visit art shows as part of their training. Mabel would paint what she remembered from seeing the Ballet Rambert perform. She was also a member of the Australian Ballet Society.
She also loved painting landscapes. Her works often showed the beautiful, misty views of the Blue Dandenongs.
