Mabel Sharman Crawford (born June 3, 1820 – died February 14, 1912) was an amazing Irish woman. She was an adventurer who loved to travel, a writer, and a strong supporter of women's rights.

Mabel Sharman Crawford: Her Early Life

Mabel Sharman Crawford was born in Dublin, Ireland, on June 3, 1820. She was one of many children born to William Sharman Crawford, who was a Member of Parliament (M.P.), and his wife, Mabel Frideswid Crawford. Her parents decided to combine their last names, becoming "Sharman Crawford."

Adventures and Writing Journeys

Mabel was a true adventurer. She loved to travel and always took very detailed notes about the places she visited. When she returned from her trips, she would turn her notes into books! For example, she wrote a book after visiting Tuscany in Italy. She did the same after a trip to Algeria in North Africa.

Mabel also did important charity work with her sisters during the terrible Irish famine. Seeing the struggles during the famine helped shape her views on the world and the places she saw.

Fighting for Women's Rights

Mabel Sharman Crawford was a strong supporter of women's rights, a movement called feminism. She wasn't afraid to speak out when she saw unfair treatment of women, whether it was in other countries or in her own.

She was an active member of the National Society for Women's Suffrage. This group worked to get women the right to vote. Mabel was part of their main committee.

Mabel also researched how men who hurt their wives were treated by the law. She used her findings to write an important article called Maltreatment of Wives. It was published in a magazine called the Westminster Review in 1893. She also supported the Rational Dress Society, which encouraged women to wear more comfortable and practical clothing instead of restrictive styles like corsets.

Mabel Sharman Crawford passed away on February 14, 1912, in Middlesex, England.
