Mac Barnett is a super creative American writer. He is famous for writing awesome children's books. He lives in Oakland, California. Mac grew up in Castro Valley, California and Oakland.

He went to Pomona College for his studies. There, he learned from the well-known writer David Foster Wallace.

Some of his most popular books have won big awards. For example, Extra Yarn won the Boston Globe–Horn Book Award in 2012. It also won the E. B. White Read Aloud Award in 2013. This book was even recognized as a Caldecott Medal Honor Book! Another book, Sam & Dave Dig a Hole, also won a Caldecott Honor. It received the E.B. White Read Aloud Award in 2015. Both of these books were illustrated by Jon Klassen.

Mac Barnett also helps create TV shows. He worked with Jon Klassen on the Emmy-award winning show Shape Island. This animated series is on Apple TV+. It is based on their popular "Shapes" trilogy of picture books.

In 2011, Mac wrote something called the Picture Book Proclamation. This was like a special statement about picture books. Many other children's writers signed it too. In 2024, he even wrote a book for adults. It's called La Porta Segreta and is about children's books. It was published in Italian.
