Mac Barnett is an American writer who creates amazing books for kids. He lives in Oakland, California. Mac was born in Castro Valley, California, and grew up there and in Oakland.
He went to Pomona College for his studies. Mac Barnett is known for his creative stories and fun characters.
Many of his books have won special awards. For example, his picture book Extra Yarn, with pictures by Jon Klassen, won the 2012 Boston Globe–Horn Book Award. It also won the 2013 E. B. White Read Aloud Award. This book was even recognized as a Caldecott Medal Honor Book. Another book, Sam & Dave Dig a Hole, also illustrated by Jon Klassen, won a Caldecott Honor and the 2015 E.B. White Read Aloud Award.
Mac Barnett also helped create the Emmy-award winning cartoon series Shape Island for Apple TV+. This show is based on his popular "Shapes" trilogy of picture books.
In 2011, Mac wrote something called the Picture Book Proclamation. This was like a special statement about picture books. Many other children's writers signed it too.
In 2024, Mac wrote a book for adults called La Porta Segreta. It's about children's books and was published in Italian.
In February 2025, Mac Barnett became the 2025-2026 National Ambassador for Young People’s Literature at the Library of Congress. This is a very important role where he helps encourage young people to read.
