The Mactaggarts Woolstore is a special old building in Teneriffe, Brisbane, Australia. It used to be a huge warehouse where wool was stored. This building was finished in 1926. Today, it is considered a heritage site, meaning it's important to history. It was added to the Queensland Heritage Register on October 21, 1992.
A Look Back in Time
The Mactaggarts Woolstore was built in 1926. It was made for a company called the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company. This building was one of about sixteen woolstores built in the early 1900s. They were all located along the Brisbane River in Teneriffe.
From the mid-1960s, the need for these large wool storage buildings started to decrease. Many of the woolstores were then sold. Their associated wharves, which were docks for ships, also became less used.
What Does It Look Like?
This large building sits right on the edge of the Brisbane River. It is on the corner of Vernon Terrace and Commercial Road. It is part of a group of old woolstores in the area.
The building is shaped like a rectangle. It has three floors and is made of brick. You can see many windows placed evenly along its sides. Inside, it used to have very wide, open spaces. These areas were not divided by walls. The original parts of the building were kept very well. In 1995, the building was changed into apartments where people now live.
