A Popular Resort Town
Since the 1800s, Macuto has been a favorite resort town. Many people from Caracas and nearby areas came here to relax. During this time, large streets and fancy private homes were built.
Macuto became known as a place where several Venezuelan presidents spent their time off. They also used it to welcome important visitors from other countries. In 1885, President Antonio Guzmán Blanco ordered a large mansion to be built. It was called "La Guzmania." This mansion later served as a home for other Venezuelan leaders. These included Juan Vicente Gómez, Marcos Pérez Jiménez, and Wolfgang Larrazábal.
A fancy hotel named the Miramar opened in the 1920s. It was a grand place, but it is no longer open today.
Artist's Retreat
Macuto was also the home of a famous Venezuelan artist named Armando Reverón. He was a modernist painter and craftsman. From 1921, he lived in Macuto with his companion Juanita. He built a unique group of huts surrounded by a wall. He called this place "El Castillete," which means "little castle."
Reverón was known for his unusual way of life in Macuto. His unique lifestyle, along with his paintings of the town, helped Macuto become even more famous.
