Vargas State (also called Estado Vargas in Spanish) is one of the 23 states in Venezuela. It is named after José María Vargas, who was the first civilian president of Venezuela.

This state is located along the beautiful Caribbean coast in the northern part of Venezuela. It shares its borders with Aragua State to the west and Miranda State to the east. To the south, you'll find the big city of Caracas. Vargas State is very important because it has Venezuela's largest seaport and its biggest airport. The main city and capital of Vargas State is La Guaira.

How Vargas State Was Formed

Before it became its own state, Vargas was part of something called the Federal District of Venezuela. This meant that the governor of the area was chosen by the main government of Venezuela.

In 1998, the government led by President Rafael Caldera decided to make a big change. They separated Vargas from the Federal District. Soon after this, Vargas officially became the 23rd state of Venezuela. This gave the people of Vargas more control over their own local government.
