Madeline Kathryn Brewer (born May 1, 1992) is an American actress. She is known for her roles in popular TV shows like Orange Is the New Black and Hemlock Grove. Madeline also plays Janine Lindo in the Hulu series The Handmaid's Tale. For this role, she was even nominated for a special award called a Primetime Emmy Award.
She has also acted in several movies, including Braid, Cam, and The Ultimate Playlist of Noise.
Early Life and Education
Madeline Brewer grew up in Pitman, New Jersey. Her parents are Laurie and Mark Brewer, and her dad is also an actor and musician. When she was in high school in 2009, she starred as Dorothy in her school musical, The Wiz. The next year, she was crowned Miss Pitman. Madeline later studied acting at the American Musical and Dramatic Academy in New York City.
Acting Career
Madeline Brewer started her acting career on television in 2013. She had a recurring role as Tricia Miller in the Netflix series Orange Is the New Black. After that, she played Miranda Cates in another Netflix show called Hemlock Grove. In 2016, she appeared in an episode of the show Black Mirror called "Men Against Fire".
In 2017, Madeline started acting in movies. Her first films were Hedgehog and Flesh and Blood. That same year, she began her main role as Janine Lindo in the Hulu series The Handmaid's Tale. Her performance in the fourth season of The Handmaid's Tale earned her a nomination for a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series in 2021.
Madeline also had important roles in two psychological horror movies in 2018: Braid and Cam. She also appeared in the independent film Where Are You. In 2021, she starred with Keean Johnson in the romantic comedy The Ultimate Playlist of Noise on Hulu. She also had roles in Separation in 2021 and Space Oddity in 2022.
In 2023, Madeline made her debut on the West End stage in London. She played Sally Bowles in the musical Cabaret at the Playhouse Theatre.
