Madhukar Hiralal Kania was an important Indian judge. He was born in Mumbai (then called Bombay) on November 18, 1927. He later became the 23rd Chief Justice of India, which is the highest judge position in the country. He served in this role from December 1991 until November 1992. Interestingly, his uncle, Sir Harilal Jekisundas Kania, was the very first Chief Justice of India. Madhukar Hiralal Kania passed away on February 1, 2016.

Early Life and Education
Madhukar Hiralal Kania grew up in Mumbai. He went to several well-known schools and colleges there. He studied at Fellowship School and St. Xavier's High School. For his higher education, he attended Elphinstone College and the Government Law College, Mumbai. At these institutions, he earned his B.A. (Hons.) and LL.B. degrees, which are important steps to becoming a lawyer.
Becoming a Lawyer and Judge
After finishing his studies, Madhukar Kania began his legal career. He officially became an Advocate (a type of lawyer) on November 1, 1949. He started practicing law at the Bombay High Court.
Practicing Law
As a lawyer, Kania mostly worked on civil cases and business-related matters. He handled cases in both the High Court and the Bombay City Civil Court. He also represented the state of Maharashtra in civil cases.
Roles in Government
Kania held several important positions working for the government:
- From December 5, 1964, to January 15, 1967, he was an Assistant Government Pleader for the State of Maharashtra in the Bombay City Civil Court. A "pleader" is a lawyer who represents the government.
- From January 16, 1967, to November 3, 1969, he was the Government Pleader for the State of Maharashtra in the same court.
Rising Through the Ranks
Madhukar Kania's career as a judge progressed steadily:
- On November 14, 1969, he was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Bombay High Court.
- He became a permanent Judge of the Bombay High Court on November 2, 1971.
- In June 1986, he was appointed the Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court. This meant he was the head judge of that court.
- In May 1987, he was appointed a Judge of the Supreme Court of India. The Supreme Court is the highest court in India.
- Finally, in December 1991, he reached the pinnacle of his career, becoming the Chief Justice of India. He held this prestigious position until his retirement in November 1992.
