The Story of Madison

Madison has an interesting history! It started with a post office called Cache Creek, which opened in 1852. Later, this post office moved and changed its name to Madison in 1877.

The name "Madison" was chosen by Daniel Bradley Hulbert. He named it after his own hometown, Madison, Wisconsin. The town itself was officially planned and named "Madison" in 1877. This happened when the railroad, called the Vaca Valley and Clear Lake Railroad, reached that spot. It became the end of the line after expanding north from Winters.

Before Madison, there was a settlement called Cottonwood about a mile south. Many buildings from Cottonwood were moved to Madison. This was because Cottonwood did not have a railroad stop, and the railroad was very important for towns to grow. Madison first appeared on a map in 1951.
