Building Madison Lake
Work on creating Madison Lake began in 1946. At that time, land was given to the state of Ohio specifically to build a new lake.
A large wall, called a dam, was built across a stream named Deer Creek. This dam helped to hold back the water. The lake, which covers about 98 acres (or 0.4 square kilometers), filled up with water in less than a year. It is about 6 feet (1.8 meters) deep.
In 1950, the lake was officially given to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. This department helps manage Ohio's natural areas. The land around the lake, which is about 183 acres (0.7 square kilometers), has since become a fun place for people to visit, known as Madison Lake State Park.
