This temple is the main part of a large area that covers more than 3 acres (about 1.2 hectares). This area also includes a place where missionaries learn, a religious education center, housing for visitors, a distribution center for Church materials, a place to research family history, and underground parking.
History of the Madrid Temple
The Madrid Spain Temple is located in Madrid, Spain. The Church announced plans to build this temple in 1993.
The temple in Madrid is an important symbol of the Church's presence in Spain. Before it was officially opened, over 100,000 people from the community and government leaders visited the temple. This included King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofía of Spain.
The president of the Church at that time, Gordon B. Hinckley, traveled to Spain to dedicate the Madrid Spain Temple. This was his third visit with the King and Queen. During his visit, President Hinckley gave them a special gift. It was a beautiful figurine of the Christus, made by famous Spanish artists from Lladró. This statue was based on an original work by Bertel Thorvaldsen. One of these special figurines is now on display in the temple's main entrance area.
President Hinckley dedicated the temple on March 19, 1999. The Madrid Spain Temple has a total of 45,800 square feet (about 4,255 square meters). It includes four rooms for special ceremonies and four rooms for sealing families together.
In 2020, the Madrid Spain Temple temporarily closed because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
