Madriz (pronounced ma-DREES) is a special area in Nicaragua. It is called a department, which is like a state or province. Madriz covers about 1,708 square kilometers. That's about 660 square miles.
In 2021, around 176,920 people lived there. The main city and capital of Madriz is Somoto.
History of Madriz
Madriz became a department in August 1936. It was created from a larger area called Nueva Segovia. The department was named after a former president of Nicaragua, José Madriz.
The Flag of Madriz
The flag of Madriz looks a lot like the flag of France. Both flags have three vertical stripes. The colors are blue, white, and red. The Madriz flag uses slightly different shades of blue and red. It also has the same shape and proportions as the French flag.
