Maelbrighte Ó Hussey was born in Ulster, a province in Ireland. He was part of the Ó hEoghusa family. In 1606, he traveled to Leuven (also called Louvain) in Belgium. There, he became a priest in 1608 and took the name Bonaventura.

His Time at Leuven

In 1607, Maelbrighte became one of the first members of the Irish Franciscans at their college. This college was called St. Anthony's and was part of the University of Leuven. The First Irish Book

"A Christian Catechism" was very popular. It was printed many times and updated over the years. This shows how important it was for people learning about their faith in Irish.
