Maemo facts for kids
Maemo is a special project that helped create an operating system for devices called Internet Tablets. It also provided tools for people to make apps for these devices. The company Nokia supported and paid for the Maemo project.
Maemo Software Development Kit
The Maemo SDK is a collection of tools that helped computer programmers create apps for Maemo devices. This SDK was built using Debian, which is a popular type of Linux operating system.
A key part of the Maemo SDK was a tool called Scratchbox. Scratchbox created a safe, separate area, like a sandbox, where developers could write and test their apps without affecting their main computer system.
Scratchbox used a program called Qemu to act like a different kind of computer chip, specifically an ARMEL processor. This meant developers could work on their regular computers (which often used x86 processors) but still make apps that would run on the ARMEL chips inside Maemo devices. Most of the app development and fixing problems happened on x86 computers, and then the final apps were made ready for ARMEL devices.
