A Creative Life
Magda Donato was born in Madrid, Spain, on February 6, 1898. Her family was wealthy and had a background in jewelry. Her father was a Spanish jeweler, and her mother's family were watchmakers from France. Because her family was well-off, Magda had the chance to get a good education. This was quite rare for girls at that time.
Starting Her Career
In 1917, Magda began writing for a newspaper called El Imparcial. She later wrote for other newspapers in Madrid, like Estampa and El Liberal. She chose the name Magda Donato as her pen name. This helped her create her own identity, separate from her older sister, Margarita Nelken, who was also a very strong personality.
Life in Exile
The Spanish Civil War forced Magda to leave her home country in 1939. She first went to France. Then, in November 1941, she arrived in Mexico. There, she started her acting career with a group called Les comediéns de France.
Writing for Kids
Magda Donato teamed up with Salvador Bartolozzi to write plays especially for children. Some of their fun plays included Pinocho en el país de los cuentos (Pinocchio in the Land of Stories). They also wrote Las aventuras de Cucuruchito y Pinocho (The Adventures of Cucuruchito and Pinocchio). These plays were released in Mexico in the 1940s.
Acting in Films
Magda Donato also became a well-known film actress. Some of her famous movies were La liga de las muchachas (1950) and Curvas peligrosas (1950). She also appeared in El amor no es negocio (1949) and Caperucita y Pulgarcito contra los monstruos (1962). In 1960, her acting work was honored with a Best Actress award. This award came from the Association of Theater Critics.
Honoring Her Legacy
Magda Donato passed away on November 3, 1966, in Mexico City. After her death, an award was created in her name. The Magda Donato Award recognized the best written play of the year. The National Association of Actors (known as ANDA) gave out this award until 1973, when it was stopped.
