Magdalena Matte Lecaros was born on August 13, 1950. She is a Chilean businesswoman and a politician. She belongs to the Independent Democratic Union (UDI) political party.
Magdalena Matte served in the Chilean government. She was part of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development. This was during the time Sebastián Piñera was President of Chile, from 2010 to 2014. She is also a member of the well-known Matte family in Chile.

Her Family Background
Magdalena Matte was born in Santiago, Chile. Her family has a strong history in Chilean politics. Her grandmother, Rosa Ester Alessandri Rodríguez, was the daughter of Arturo Alessandri. Arturo Alessandri was President of Chile two times. He served from 1920 to 1925 and again from 1932 to 1938.
Rosa was also the sister of Jorge Alessandri. Jorge Alessandri was President of Chile from 1958 to 1964. Magdalena's grandfather, Arturo Matte Larraín, was a lawyer and a member of Congress. He was also a Minister and ran for president in 1952. He helped start a big forest and paper company called CMPC.
Magdalena's father, Arturo Matte Alessandri, passed away in 1965. At that time, Magdalena was 14 years old.
Her Education
Magdalena Matte went to school in Santiago. She attended the Colegio Santa Úrsula. After finishing school, she went to university. She studied at the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile. There, she earned a degree in civil engineering.
In 1974, she married Hernán Larraín Fernández. He is a Chilean Senator. He was also the President of the Senate from 2004 to 2005. Magdalena and Hernán have six children together.
Her Work and Public Service
Working in Business
Magdalena Matte has worked mostly in the private business world. A big part of her career was with a company called Papeleria Dimar. She was both an executive and an investor in this company.
In 2002, she started working with Fondo Confianza. This was through a foundation called La Vaca. Her work there involved helping women who wanted to start their own businesses. These women had limited money. She helped them get funding.
She also helped create 230 centers for work and education. These centers helped about 3,000 women. They were located in the El Maule Sur area of Chile.
Her Role in Government
On February 9, 2010, Sebastián Piñera was elected President of Chile. He chose Magdalena Matte to be his Minister of Housing and Urban Development. This meant she was in charge of helping people find homes and improving cities.
She served in this important role for about a year. On April 19, 2011, Magdalena Matte stepped down from her position as minister.
