Magdalena Matte Lecaros (born August 13, 1950) is a Chilean businesswoman and politician. She is a member of the Independent Democratic Union (UDI) political party. She served as the Minister of Housing and Urban Development for Chile. This was during the time Sebastián Piñera was President, from 2010 to 2014. Magdalena Matte is also part of the well-known Matte family in Chile.

Magdalena Matte's Early Life and Family
Magdalena Matte was born in Santiago, the capital city of Chile. Her family has a strong connection to Chilean history and politics.
Family Connections
Her grandmother, Rosa Ester Alessandri Rodríguez, was the daughter of Arturo Alessandri. Arturo Alessandri was a very important person. He served as Chile's president two times. Rosa was also the sister of Jorge Alessandri, who was also a President of Chile later on.
Magdalena's grandfather on her father's side was Arturo Matte Larraín. He was a lawyer and a member of the Chilean Congress. He also served as a Minister for the country. He even ran for president in 1952. He helped start a big company that works with forests and paper called CMPC.
Education and Personal Life
Magdalena Matte was 14 years old when her father, Arturo Matte Alessandri, passed away in 1965. She finished her school studies at Colegio Santa Úrsula in Santiago. After school, she went to the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile. There, she studied to become a civil engineer.
In 1974, she married Hernán Larraín Fernández. He is a Chilean Senator and was once the President of the Senate. Magdalena and Hernán have six children together.
Magdalena Matte's Career
Magdalena Matte has worked mostly in the private business world. She spent a lot of time at a company called Papeleria Dimar. Here, she was both a leader and an investor. This means she helped manage the company and also put money into it.
Helping Women Entrepreneurs
In 2002, Magdalena Matte started working with a group called Fondo Confianza. This was through a foundation known as La Vaca. Her work here focused on helping women who wanted to start their own businesses. These were women who did not have a lot of money.
She helped create 230 places where women could work and learn. These centers helped about 3,000 women in the El Maule Sur area of Chile. This work helped many women become more independent and successful.
Magdalena Matte's Political Role
On February 9, 2010, Sebastián Piñera was chosen to be the next President of Chile. He picked Magdalena Matte to be his Minister of Housing and Urban Development. In this role, she was in charge of helping people find homes and improving cities.
However, on April 19, 2011, Magdalena Matte left her position as minister. This happened because there were questions about a payment made to a construction company called Kodama.
