Margaret Moffat (born Margaret Liddell Linck on January 7, 1873) was a British actress. She was also a brave suffragette. Suffragettes were women who fought for the right to vote. Margaret Moffat was one of the very first Scottish suffragettes to be arrested. She also acted in many movies, including a small role in Alfred Hitchcock's film Saboteur. She passed away on February 19, 1943.
Early Life and Acting Career
Margaret Moffat was born in Spittal, a town in northern England. This was different from most of her brothers and sisters, who were born in Scotland. She was one of seven children born to Gottlob and Margaret Liddell Linck.
Margaret had a special talent for singing. After finishing school, she first worked selling fabric. But soon, she decided she wanted to become an actress. This was a big step for her.
Fighting for Women's Rights
Margaret Moffat became very involved in the movement for women's voting rights. These women were called suffragettes. In February 1907, she was sent to a special meeting called the "Women's Parliament" in London.
During a protest at the House of Commons, more than 50 suffragettes were arrested. Margaret Moffat was one of them. She and Annie Fraser were the first two Scottish suffragettes to be arrested. Margaret was given a fine, but she refused to pay it. Because of this, she was sent to Holloway Prison for two weeks.
Later that same year, her husband, Graham Moffat, also supported women's right to vote. He was an actor, just like Margaret. Graham started a group called the Men's League for Women's Suffrage. This group helped men who believed women should have the right to vote.
Later Life and Films
Margaret Moffat continued her acting career. She appeared in several films, using the name "Margaret Moffat." Some of her movies included My Gal Sal and Ringside Maisie.
In 1933, Margaret and her husband moved to South Africa. Even after moving, she still acted in American films. One of her last roles was a small part in the famous director Alfred Hitchcock's movie, Saboteur. Margaret Moffat passed away in Cape Town, South Africa, in February 1943.
