What Was Magic Mountain?
Magic Mountain was very popular, especially with local kids and teenagers. It was a great place to visit, particularly during Adelaide's hot summers. The park's biggest draw was its four exciting water slides. These slides were located on Level 2 of the park. At the time, they were the largest water slide setup in the entire southern hemisphere!
Magic Mountain Tokens
To make things easier and safer for visitors, especially kids, Magic Mountain used its own special tokens. This was similar to how some other big parks operated. You would buy these tokens, and then use them to play all the games and enjoy the attractions inside the park. One token always equaled one game.
The tokens looked a bit like Australian $1 coins. One side showed the Magic Mountain logo with the words "NO CASH VALUE" and the year it was used. The other side sometimes had a sponsor's logo, like Coca-Cola. Other tokens had "NO CASH VALUE" in big letters around a logo shaped like South Australia with "SA" on it.
Fun Attractions at Magic Mountain
Magic Mountain had different attractions spread across three levels.
Ground Floor Fun
The ground floor was packed with games and rides:
- Lots of pinball machines
- Many arcade machines
- Several Air Hockey tables
- A classic Carousel (this carousel has been saved and is now at The Beachouse!)
- A fun mini-golf course
Level 1 Adventures
On Level 1, you could find:
- A Light-Rifle Shooting Gallery with a Wild West theme. This area looked like a red desert plain. When you shot the targets, they would do funny things. For example, a piano player target would move and play a short tune when hit.
- Exciting Bumper Boats
- Classic Dodgem Cars
- Sky Cycles, where you could pedal above the park
Level 2 Thrills
Level 2 was home to the main attraction:
- Four awesome Water Slides
Why Magic Mountain Closed
Magic Mountain closed as part of a big building project called the Holdfast Shores development. This project aimed to build new apartments and a hotel in the area. The park needed to be removed to create more open space as planned.
The park closed for good on July 18, 2004. Soon after, it was taken down. A new family entertainment complex, The Beachouse, was built in its place and opened on July 1, 2006.
About The Beachouse
The Beachouse is the family entertainment center that replaced Magic Mountain. It is also located on the foreshore in Glenelg, Adelaide, South Australia. This five-story complex offers many fun attractions, including:
- Waterslides
- Dodgem cars
- Bumper boats
- Mini golf
- A playcastle
- A train ride
- Arcade games
The historic carousel from Magic Mountain was restored and now stands proudly at The Beachouse. It's a very popular spot for photos! The Beachouse also has a special function room on Level 3, which is used for events like weddings, birthdays, and conferences.
