Magicicada tredecassini is a special type of periodical cicada. These insects are only found in the United States. They are known for their unique 13-year life cycle.
This cicada looks almost exactly like its cousin, the 17-year periodical cicada called Magicicada cassini. Because they are so similar, people often talk about them together. They are sometimes called "cassini periodical cicadas" or "cassini-type periodical cicadas."
One cool thing about cassini-type males is how they "sing." They can all start singing and flying at the same time. Imagine tens of thousands of cicadas making music together!
Life Cycle
The Magicicada tredecassini has a very long life cycle. From the time they hatch from an egg until they die as adults, these cicadas usually live for about 13 years. Most of this time is spent underground.
However, their life cycle can sometimes be a bit different. Some cicadas might emerge earlier, after about nine years. Others might stay underground longer, for up to seventeen years.
