The Magnolia pacifica is a special type of Magnolia tree. It grows only in the western parts of Mexico, specifically in the states of Jalisco and Nayarit. This beautiful tree is known for its size and where it lives.

What Does the Pacific Magnolia Look Like?

The Pacific Magnolia is a medium-sized tree. It can grow quite tall, reaching heights of 15 to 25 meters (about 49 to 82 feet). Imagine a building that's 5 to 8 stories high! Its trunk can also be very wide, from 40 to 80 centimeters (about 1.3 to 2.6 feet) across.

Where Does the Pacific Magnolia Live?

This unique tree is found in only a few mountain areas in western Mexico. You can find it in the state of Nayarit, near a place called Acaponeta, and in the Sierra de San Juan mountains. In Jalisco, it grows in the mountains around San Sebastián del Oeste and in the Sierra el Cuale.

The Pacific Magnolia often lives in what is called a cloud forest. These are forests high up in the mountains where clouds often cover the trees, making the air very humid and misty. It also likes other wet places like deep valleys and gorges. You can find it in different types of forests, including pine-oak forests and tropical evergreen forests, at elevations between 790 and 2,250 meters (about 2,590 to 7,380 feet) above sea level. The total area where this tree grows is about 4,732 square kilometers.

Why Is the Pacific Magnolia Important?

The Pacific Magnolia is facing some big challenges. Its home, the forest, is shrinking. This is happening because people are cutting down trees (deforestation) and changing the land into farms. Because of this, the number of Pacific Magnolia trees is going down.

Scientists have looked at its situation and decided it is an Endangered species. This means it is at a very high risk of disappearing forever if we don't protect it. Protecting these trees helps keep the balance of nature in their unique forest homes.

Pacific Magnolia's Family Tree

The Pacific Magnolia belongs to a group of trees within the Magnolia family. It has some close relatives that also live in western Mexico. These include the Magnolia pugana, which grows in the mountains north of Guadalajara, and the Magnolia vallartensis, found near the coast around Puerto Vallarta. Sometimes, these other magnolias are even considered to be types of Magnolia pacifica because they are so similar.
