Mahani Teave's Early Life
Mahani Teave was born in Hawaii. Her father was from the Rapa Nui of Easter Island, and her mother was American.
Mahani loved music from a young age. She studied at the Austral University of Chile. Later, she went to music schools in the United States and Germany. These schools helped her become a professional musician.
Her Musical Journey

Mahani Teave is the only professional classical musician from Easter Island. She started playing classical music as a child. When her first teacher left the island, her family moved. They went to mainland Chile so Mahani could keep learning music.
Mahani has performed all over the world. She has played concerts in Chile, Europe, and Asia. In 2014, she played her first show in Canada. It was at a special event celebrating the famous composer Franz Liszt.
Helping Her Island
In 2012, Mahani Teave started the Easter Island Music School. This was the first music school on the island! It teaches children how to play instruments like the piano, cello, ukulele, and violin.
Mahani and her husband, Enrique Icka, run a group called Toki Rapa Nui. This group helps support the music school. They work to give children on Easter Island the chance to learn music.
In 2020, a documentary film was made about Mahani. It is called Song of Rapa Nui. The film shows her life in music. It also highlights her work in conservation, which means protecting nature.
In 2021, Mahani released her first music album. It is called Rapa Nui Odyssey. The album features pieces by famous composers. These include Bach, Chopin, and Liszt.
Awards and Recognition
Mahani Teave has won many awards for her musical talent.
- In 2008, she won the APES Prize. This award was for the best classical music performance in Chile. She won it for playing a piece by Rachmaninov.
- She also won the Cleveland Institute of Music Concerto Competition in 2004.
- In 1999, she won the Claudio Arrau International Piano Competition.
- Andrés Bello National University gave her a Merit Prize for arts in 2012.
In 2012, Mahani Teave became a Steinway & Sons Artist. This is a special honor given to top pianists. In 2016, she received an award from Scotiabank. It was for her leadership and for promoting music on Easter Island.
