When Chhattisgarh was formed in 2000, he became the Minister of Industry and Commerce. In 2003, his party lost the state elections. Mahendra Karma then became the Leader of the Opposition in the state assembly. He was known as "Bastar Tiger" because he took a strong stand against the Maoist rebels in the region.
