Mahmoud Abdel Aziz (Arabic: محمود عبد العزيز‎) was a beloved Egyptian actor. He was born on June 4, 1946, and passed away on November 12, 2016. He became very famous for his many roles in Egyptian movies and TV shows. People especially loved his patriotic role in the TV series Raafat el-Hagan.

Early Life

Mahmoud Abdel Aziz grew up in Wardeyan, a neighborhood in Alexandria, Egypt. His family was middle-class. Even though he studied Agricultural Science at Alexandria University, he loved acting and practiced it in the university's theater.

Career

Mahmoud Abdel Aziz started his acting journey in the mid-1970s. His first TV show was Al Dawama. Soon after, he entered the movie world with the classic Egyptian film Al Hafeez.

In the late 1970s and early 1980s, Mahmoud Abdel Aziz starred in over 25 movies. He became very popular, and many of his early films were romantic dramas. As he grew as an actor, he started taking on different kinds of roles. This showed off his amazing talent. He was known for being great at both comedy and serious drama.

The 1980s were a big time for Mahmoud Abdel Aziz. He became a superstar with very successful movies like El Aar (1982) and El Kef (1985). He also starred in the TV series Raafat El-Hagan (1987). This show is one of the most popular Egyptian TV works ever! It was based on the true story of Refaat Al-Gammal, a famous Egyptian spy. This spy worked in Israel for over 20 years, even before and after the Six-Day War.

Mahmoud Abdel Aziz acted in more than 100 movies and many TV shows throughout his career. He always surprised his audience with new and exciting roles. For example, after being away from Egyptian television for seven years, he returned with the popular TV series Bab El Khalk in 2012.

Personal Life

Mahmoud Abdel Aziz was married two times. His first wife was Jelan. They had two sons together: Mohamed Mahmoud Abdel Aziz, who became a film producer and director, and Karim Mahmoud Abdel Aziz. After their divorce, he married Poussy Chalabi, an Egyptian TV presenter. His nephew, Kato Hafez, is also involved in music as a songwriter and singer.

Awards

Mahmoud Abdel Aziz won many awards for his acting:

  • He won Best Actor for the movie Kit Kat (1991) at both the Damascus International Film Festival and the Alexandria International Film Festival.
  • He received the Best Actor award for The Captain (1997) at the Damascus International Film Festival.
  • He was named Best Actor for Pleasure Market (2000) at the Cairo International Film Festival.
  • He won Best Actor again for The Magician (2001) at the Damascus International Film Festival.
  • He also received a Life Time Achievement award at the Dubai International Film Festival.
