The Main–Yankee Street Historic District is a special area in Gainesville, Alabama. It's like a time capsule, showing how homes looked before the American Civil War. This district was added to the National Register of Historic Places on October 3, 1985. It covers about 6.5 acres and has five important buildings. All these buildings were built before the Civil War.

Exploring the Historic District

Gainesville is a town in southwestern Alabama, located by the Tombigbee River. Long ago, before trains were common, Gainesville was a very busy inland port. This means many boats came and went, making it an important trading spot. The town was at its busiest right before the American Civil War.

The Main–Yankee Street Historic District is one of two historic areas in Gainesville. The other is the Gainesville Historic District. This district is mainly found along Main Street, which is also called Yankee Street.

Architectural Styles You Can See

The buildings in this district show off two main types of architecture. These are the Federal style and the Greek Revival style.

  • Federal Style: This style was popular in the United States from about 1780 to 1840. It often features simple, elegant designs with balanced shapes. You might see arched doorways or decorative fanlights above doors.
  • Greek Revival Style: Popular from about 1825 to 1860, this style looks like ancient Greek temples. It often has tall columns, grand entrances, and a strong, impressive look.

Important Homes in the District

There are five main homes that make this district special. They all tell a story about life in Gainesville before the Civil War.

  • Russell-Woodruff-Turrentine House: Built around 1835–1840.
  • Lewis-Jones-Fields House: Built around 1840–1850.
  • Lewis-Long House: Built around 1835–1840.
