What are the MSYM Camps?
MSYM has two main camps: Junior and Senior. Each camp lasts for one week in July.
Junior Camp
The Junior camp is for students who will be in 6th through 9th grade. It usually happens in the second week of July.
Senior Camp
The Senior camp is for students entering 9th through 12th grade. It also welcomes students who have just graduated high school. This camp typically starts around July 18th.
What Can You Learn at MSYM?
MSYM offers a wide range of musical learning opportunities. You can join different groups and take interesting classes.
Band Programs
There are several bands at MSYM, including Concert Band, Symphonic Band, and various Jazz Ensembles and Combos. On the first day, staff members hold auditions. This helps place students in the right band for their skill level. Auditions usually involve playing a short prepared piece, some scales, and reading music you haven't seen before. If you want a top spot in a jazz group, you might also do some improvisation.
Singing in Chorus
All students can join the Chorus. You just need to sign up and tell them your voice part. There is also a Chamber Choir. This is for students who do not play an instrument.
Exciting Music Classes
MSYM offers many different classes. These include Master Classes, where you learn from expert musicians. You can also take classes in Improvisation, which teaches you to create music on the spot. Other music classes are also available. Every camper also gets to attend at least one special lesson for their instrument or voice part each day. There is also a Chamber Music period.
Your Daily Schedule
You don't have to choose between playing an instrument or singing at MSYM. For example, a typical camper's schedule might include one of the main bands, Chorus, and either a Jazz Ensemble or Musical Theater practice. Another camper might choose Chorus, Chamber Choir, and a Music Theory class. MSYM gives students many choices and chances to explore their musical interests.
Fun Camp Activities
Every evening, campers enjoy a special activity. These can be concerts by amazing musicians, including staff, students, or guest performers. There are also Solo Night and Ensemble Night, where campers can perform. Other fun activities include movie nights, dances, and swimming. The activities change each year, so there's always something new!
Performance Opportunities
Campers get many chances to perform during the week. You can show off your talents at the Camper/Staff Variety Night or Solo/Ensemble Night. There's also a Jazz Night. On the last day of camp, there are final performances by the musical theater group, bands, and chorus.
Life at Camp
Campers live in the university dorms. Boys and girls stay on separate floors. Usually, two or three campers share a room. Meals are eaten at the campus dining hall. Experienced staff and counselors supervise all campers. A certified camp nurse is also on hand to ensure everyone stays healthy and safe.
