Maipú is a large city and commune (like a local district) in Chile. It's part of the bigger Greater Santiago area. It was founded on February 16, 1821. Maipú is famous as the place where the Battle of Maipú happened on April 5, 1818. This battle was very important because it helped Chile become truly independent. Most people living in Maipú are part of the middle class.

In 2017, Maipú was the second largest commune in Chile, right after Puente Alto.

About Maipú's Population

Let's look at some facts about the people living in Maipú. According to a census from 2002, Maipú covers an area of 133 square kilometers. At that time, about 479,911 people lived there. This included 233,000 men and 247,000 women.

Most of the people, about 99.3%, lived in city areas. Only a small number, about 0.7%, lived in rural (countryside) areas. The population of Maipú grew a lot between 1992 and 2002, increasing by 82.6%.

How Maipú is Governed

As a commune, Maipú is a local administrative area in Chile. It is managed by a municipal council. The council is led by an alcalde, who is like a mayor. The alcalde is chosen by the people in an election every four years.

The current alcalde for the period from 2021 to 2025 is Tomás Vodanovic. He belongs to the RD political party.
