Maisoncelles-la-Jourdan was once a small village, known in France as a "commune." It was located in the northwest part of France, in a region called Basse-Normandie. This area is also part of the Calvados department. Think of a department like a county in some other countries.
What Was a Commune?
In France, a commune is the smallest area for local government. It's like a town or a village. Each commune has its own mayor and local council. They manage things like schools, roads, and local services for the people living there. Maisoncelles-la-Jourdan was one of these small communities.
Where Was Maisoncelles-la-Jourdan Located?
Maisoncelles-la-Jourdan was found in the region of Basse-Normandie. This region is in the northwest of France, close to the coast. It was also part of the Calvados department. The Calvados department is famous for its apple orchards and a type of apple brandy.
The village was located about 230 meters (around 750 feet) above sea level. It covered an area of about 13.54 square kilometers (about 5.2 square miles). In 1999, around 470 people lived there.
Becoming Vire-Normandie
On January 1, 2016, Maisoncelles-la-Jourdan joined with several other communes. They all merged together to form a new, larger commune called Vire-Normandie. This often happens when smaller villages combine their resources. It helps them work together more effectively and provide better services for everyone.
