History of the Monument
This special monument was built to remember Paul Chomedey de Maisonneuve. He was a very important person because he was one of the main founders of Montreal. The monument was officially revealed on July 1, 1895. This event was part of big celebrations for the 250th anniversary of Montreal's founding, which happened in 1892.
In the 1890s, people in Montreal started putting up many plaques and monuments. Groups like the Antiquarian and Numismatic Society helped a lot with the Maisonneuve Monument project. Another group, the Société historique de Montréal, put up an obelisk in 1892-93 to remember Montreal's founders. Both French-speaking and English-speaking people in Montreal agreed to honor the important figures from the time of New France. Each group wanted to highlight their own heroes.
