The Maitland Art Center is a special historic place in Maitland, Florida. It was once called The Research Studio. An artist and architect named J. Andre Smith started and designed it in 1937. He wanted it to be a place where artists could try new and exciting art ideas.

A kind person named Mary Curtis Bok helped pay for the center. Many famous artists came to work there, like Ralston Crawford, Milton Avery, and Consuelo Kanaga. You can find the center at 231 West Packwood Avenue. On November 17, 1982, it became part of the U.S. National Register of Historic Places, which lists important historical sites.

What is the Maitland Art Center?

The Maitland Art Center is one of five museums that are part of the Art & History Museums - Maitland (A&H). The A&H is a group that helps run these museums.

At the Maitland Art Center, artists can live and work there for a while. They also offer many art classes for both kids and adults. Artists can get special training, and everyone can learn to enjoy art more through fun programs. The A&H is a non-profit group, which means they use all their money to help the museums, not to make a profit. They get money from the City of Maitland, the State of Florida, and donations from people and other groups.

Unique Architecture and Design

The Maitland Art Center is very special because of its unique design. It's one of the few buildings in the southeastern United States that uses a style called Mayan Revival architecture. Some people also call this "Fantasy Architecture." This style looks like ancient Mayan buildings, but with a modern twist.

The center's design is a mix of ancient Mayan architecture and Art Deco styles. This unique look is why it was named a National Historic Landmark in August 2014. This means it's one of the most important historic places in the country!

Gardens and Events

The beautiful grounds of the Maitland Art Center are a popular spot for outdoor weddings. There are three lovely areas where weddings can take place:

  • The Main Garden
  • The Chapel
  • The Mayan Courtyard
