Makapuu Point 2
Makapuʻu Point Lighthouse

Makapuʻu Point is the easternmost tip of the island of Oʻahu in Hawaii. It's located in the Makapuʻu area, about 12 miles east of Honolulu. This spot is super popular for hiking and offers amazing views! You can see Makapuʻu and Waimanalo Bay on one side, and the Ka ʻIwi Channel on the other.

Makapuʻu Point is also home to the famous Makapuʻu Point Lighthouse. This lighthouse was built way back in 1909. It became automated, meaning it runs by itself, in 1974. The lighthouse has one of the biggest Fresnel lenses in the world. A Fresnel lens is a special type of lens that helps make the light from the lighthouse shine very far and bright. The lighthouse is lit by a powerful 1000-watt lamp. If that lamp ever burns out, a backup lamp automatically spins into place to keep the light shining! The U.S. Coast Guard owns and takes care of the lighthouse and the land around it.
