Makawao is found on the northwest side of Haleakalā, a large volcano. This area is known as "Upcountry Maui." It's a rural part of the island with lots of farms and ranches. Makawao is like the main center for this whole region. East of Makawao, you'll find the Makawao Forest Reserve, a beautiful natural area.
