About Makeda Silvera
Makeda Silvera moved to Canada with her family when she was 12 years old. Today, she lives in Toronto, Ontario.
She started her writing career by publishing two collections of short stories in the 1990s. Later, she released her first novel, The Revenge of Maria, in 1998. Her next novel, The Heart Does Not Bend, came out in 2002.
In 1985, Makeda Silvera co-founded a publishing company called Sister Vision Press with Stephanie Martin. She worked as a managing editor there. Sister Vision Press was important because it published books by many different writers, especially women of color. Makeda Silvera also edited several collections of writings, including Piece of My Heart (1991). This book was one of the first collections in North America to feature literature by women of color from various backgrounds.
Sister Vision Press published 50 different books before it closed in 2001. Piece of My Heart was described as a very important collection of diverse voices. It brought together writings from well-known authors like Audre Lorde and Barbara Smith, along with new writers. This collection showed how literature can be strongly connected to social activism for many women from different ethnic and racial backgrounds.
