Makeda Silvera (born 1955 in Kingston, Jamaica) is a Jamaican Canadian writer. She is known for her novels and short stories.

About Makeda Silvera

Makeda Silvera moved to Canada with her family when she was 12 years old. She now lives in Toronto, Ontario. She started her writing career by publishing two collections of short stories in the 1990s.

Her first novel, The Revenge of Maria, came out in 1998. She then published another novel, The Heart Does Not Bend, in 2002.

Sister Vision Press

In 1985, Makeda Silvera helped start a publishing company called Sister Vision Press with Stephanie Martin. She worked as a managing editor there. She also edited several collections of writings by different authors.

One important collection she edited was Piece of My Heart (1991). This book was the first of its kind in North America to feature writings by women of color. Sister Vision Press published 50 books in total before it closed in 2001.

The Canadian Journal of Women and the Law described Piece of My Heart as a very important collection. It brought together writings from famous authors like Audre Lorde and Barbara Smith. It also included new writers. The journal said the book showed how writing and social activism are connected for many women from different backgrounds.
