Makoto Teguramori (born November 14, 1967) is a famous Japanese football coach and a former player. He is currently the head coach for the V.League 1 club Hà Nội in Vietnam. He has led several teams to success, both in Japan and in other countries.

Playing Career: Makoto Teguramori as a Player
Makoto Teguramori was born in Gonohe, Aomori, Japan. After finishing high school, he started his football career as a player. In 1986, he joined a team called Sumitomo Metal, which later became known as Kashima Antlers. During his time there, his team finished second in the 1987 JSL Cup. In 1993, he moved to another team, NEC Yamagata, which later changed its name to Montedio Yamagata. He played football professionally until 1995, when he decided to retire as a player.
Managerial Career: From Player to Coach
After he stopped playing, Teguramori began a new journey as a football coach.
Early Coaching Days: Learning the Ropes
His coaching career started in 1996 at Montedio Yamagata, the same club where he finished his playing career. He worked there as an assistant coach until 2000. In 2001, he moved to Oita Trinita. At Oita Trinita, he worked as a physical coach, helping players stay fit, and also as an assistant coach until 2003.
Leading Vegalta Sendai: A Successful Run
In 2004, Teguramori joined Vegalta Sendai as a coach. In 2008, he became the main manager for the first time. In his first year as manager, Vegalta Sendai finished third in the J2 League, which is Japan's second-highest football league. The next year, in 2009, his team won the J2 League championship! This meant they were promoted to the J1 League, Japan's top football league.
In 2011, a big earthquake and tsunami hit Sendai. Despite this difficult time, Vegalta Sendai finished in fourth place in the J1 League, which was their best finish ever. In 2012, they came in second place, which allowed them to play in the 2013 AFC Champions League, a big competition for clubs in Asia. He left Vegalta Sendai at the end of 2013 to coach the Japan Under-23 national team.
Coaching Japan's National Teams: Olympic Dreams
In 2014, Makoto Teguramori became the manager for the Japan U-23 national team. He also worked as an assistant coach for the main Japan national team.
In 2016, he led the Japan U-23 team to win the 2016 AFC U-23 Championship in Qatar. This was the first time Japan had won this tournament, and it meant they qualified for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Brazil. At the Olympics, his team played well, earning four points in their group. However, they finished third in their group, just missing out on moving to the next stage of the competition.
New Challenges: Coaching in Japan and Thailand
After his time with the national teams, Teguramori took on new challenges with different clubs.
V-Varen Nagasaki
In February 2019, he became the manager for J2 League club V-Varen Nagasaki. He coached them for two years.
Return to Vegalta Sendai
In February 2021, Teguramori returned to manage J1 League club Vegalta Sendai for a second time.
BG Pathum United: Success in Thailand
On January 27, 2022, Makoto Teguramori was hired as the head coach for BG Pathum United in Thailand. He quickly helped the club win the 2022 Thailand Champions Cup. He left the club in October of that year.
Chonburi
On May 13, 2023, he became the head coach for Thai League 1 club Chonburi.
Second Time with BG Pathum United
On December 25, 2023, Teguramori returned to BG Pathum United. He aimed to help them win more trophies. On June 16, 2024, he led BG Pathum United to win their first-ever Thai League Cup title, beating Muangthong United 1–0 in the final. He left the club again on October 8, 2024.
Hà Nội FC: Coaching in Vietnam
On February 17, 2025, the V.League 1 club Hà Nội in Vietnam announced that Teguramori was their new head coach. In his first season with Hanoi FC, he guided the club to a second-place finish in the league. On July 10, 2025, the club extended his contract for another year.
