This meant they were promoted to the J1 League, Japan's top football league.

In 2011, a big earthquake and tsunami hit Sendai. Despite this difficult time, Vegalta Sendai finished in fourth place in the J1 League, which was their best finish ever. In 2012, they came in second place, which allowed them to play in the 2013 AFC Champions League, a big competition for clubs in Asia.
