Makran (princely state) facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Makran was a special kind of kingdom that ruled itself. It was located in the very southwest part of what is now Pakistan. Makran existed as a separate state until 1955.

What Was Makran?

Makran was known as a princely state. This means it was a territory that had its own ruler, often called a prince or a local leader. These states were not fully independent countries. Instead, they were connected to a larger power. For Makran, this larger power was first British India and later Pakistan. Even so, Makran had a lot of control over its own daily life and rules. It stopped being a separate state in 1955.

Where Was Makran Located?

Makran was in the extreme southwest area of modern-day Pakistan. This region is now covered by three important districts:

Imagine looking at a map of Pakistan. Makran would be right on the coast, in the bottom left corner.

Gwadar's Special Status

Interestingly, the state of Makran did not include the city of Gwadar itself. Gwadar was a special area called an enclave. An enclave is a piece of land that belongs to one country but is completely surrounded by another country's territory. In this case, Gwadar was ruled by Oman, a country across the sea, until 1958. So, even though Gwadar was right next to Makran, it was under different rule for a long time.
