Maksim Aleksandrovich Shatskikh (born August 30, 1978) is a famous Uzbekistani professional football coach for Pakhtakor Tashkent and a former player.
He was a very good striker, known for scoring many goals. Many people consider him one of the best Uzbekistani players of all time. He was the top goal scorer for the Uzbekistan national team with 34 goals in 61 games. Shatskikh is also the joint all-time top scorer in the Ukrainian Premier League with 123 goals in 341 games, sharing this record with Serhii Rebrov. He played for Dynamo Kyiv for ten years, from 1999 to 2009.
On July 28, 1999, Shatskikh became the first Asian player to score in the UEFA Champions League. He is also the second Uzbekistani player, after Mirjalol Kasymov, to score in UEFA football competitions. For his country, he played in three AFC Asian Cup tournaments, helping Uzbekistan reach fourth place in 2011.
He last played for Rukh Vynnyky. On April 8, 2016, he announced that he had stopped playing football and joined the coaching staff of the Dynamo football academy. His brother, Oleg Shatskikh, was also a footballer.

Maksim Shatskikh's Football Journey
Playing for Dynamo Kyiv
After playing for clubs in Uzbekistan and Russia, Maksim Shatskikh joined Dynamo Kyiv in Ukraine in 1999. He was brought in to replace Andriy Shevchenko, who had moved to A.C. Milan. In his first season with Dynamo, he scored two goals in a 3–2 win against Karpaty Lviv, helping Dynamo win their eighth league title in a row. The media even called him the "next Shevchenko."
In his first season with Dynamo Kyiv, he won the Ukrainian Premier League. He also became the top scorer in the league, with 20 goals. In the 2002–03 season, he scored 22 goals, matching Serhii Rebrov's record from 1997–98. Shatskikh also scored 5 goals in his first UEFA Champions League season in 1999–2000. On July 28, 1999, he scored his first Champions League goal against Žalgiris Vilnius. With Kyiv, Shatskikh played in the UEFA Champions League for nine seasons, scoring 11 goals in total.
Time with Arsenal Kyiv
After playing for Lokomotiv Astana in Kazakhstan in 2009, Maksim returned to Kyiv. He joined Arsenal Kyiv during the winter break. While playing for Arsenal Kyiv, Shatskikh scored his 100th league goal. On April 7, 2010, the president of Arsenal Kyiv gave Shatskikh a special Golden Ball award for reaching this milestone against Metalurh Zaporizhzhia. The president even joked that he had ordered another Golden Ball for Shatskikh's future 200th goal!
At the start of the 2013–14 season, Shatskikh rejoined Arsenal Kyiv after a short time with Chornomorets Odesa.
Playing for Hoverla
On December 30, 2013, Shatskikh signed a 2.5-year contract with Hoverla Uzhhorod. On July 27, 2014, in a Ukrainian Premier League match against Karpaty Lviv, which ended in a 2–2 draw, Shatskikh scored Hoverla's first goal. This was his 122nd goal in the Ukrainian Premier League.
On August 23, 2014, in a Ukrainian Cup match against Cherkaskyi Dnipro, Hoverla won 2–1. Shatskikh scored his team's second goal in the 67th minute. After this match, his total goals in the Ukrainian Cup reached 24. This made him the second-best goalscorer in the tournament's history, just behind Andriy Vorobey (who had 25 goals).
He became the highest goalscorer in the history of the Ukrainian Premier League with 124 goals. He reached this record on October 4, 2014, surpassing Serhii Rebrov. Shatskikh scored his 124th goal in a match against Zorya Luhansk, which Hoverla lost 2–1. He is also a member of the Oleh Blokhin club, which celebrates players who have scored 100 or more goals in Ukrainian football.
At the end of the 2014–15 season, Shatskikh left Hoverla and joined an amateur club from Lviv.
International Football Career
Maksim Shatskikh was a talented player from a young age and could have played for either Uzbekistan or Russia. He chose to represent Uzbekistan.
In 2005, Shatskikh was considered one of the top three Asian players. On October 13, 2007, he scored an amazing 5 goals against Taiwan. On June 2, 2008, he scored a goal for Uzbekistan in a 7–3 win over Singapore during a World Cup 2010 qualification game. This goal made him the joint top scorer for his national team with Mirjalol Kasymov. On October 15, 2008, he scored against Japan, becoming the all-time top scorer for Uzbekistan.
On May 29, 2014, Shatskikh played his last match for the national team in a friendly game against Oman. He played 61 matches for his national team and scored 34 goals. He was Uzbekistan's leading national team goalscorer until June 2023, when Eldor Shomurodov broke his record.
Personal Life
Maksim Shatskikh became a citizen of Ukraine after he retired from playing football. His brother, Oleg Shatskikh, was also a professional footballer.
