High School and College Basketball
Malachi Richardson started his high school basketball journey at Trenton Catholic Academy. He then spent his sophomore year at Roselle Catholic High School. For his junior and senior years, he returned to Trenton Catholic Academy. His old coach, Fred Falchi, even came out of retirement to coach him again!
During his time at Trenton Catholic Academy, Malachi scored a total of 1,245 points. In his junior year, he averaged 19.2 points per game, and in his senior year, he averaged 18.7 points. Experts rated Richardson as a "four-star recruit," which means he was considered one of the top young players in the country. He was ranked 23rd overall and the fifth-best shooting guard in his high school class of 2015.
After high school, Richardson played one season of college basketball for Syracuse. He averaged 13.4 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 2.1 assists per game. He was also named to the ACC All-Freshman team, which honors the best first-year players in the Atlantic Coast Conference. On April 18, 2016, he decided to enter the NBA draft, which meant he would not play his remaining three years of college basketball.
Professional Basketball Career
Playing for the Sacramento Kings (2016–2018)
On June 23, 2016, Malachi Richardson was picked by the Charlotte Hornets as the 22nd player in the 2016 NBA draft. However, his rights were soon traded to the Sacramento Kings on July 7, 2016. He signed his first professional contract with the Kings on July 15, 2016.
During his time with the Kings, he sometimes played for their minor league team, the Reno Bighorns, in the NBA G League. This league helps players develop their skills. In February 2017, he had a hamstring injury that kept him from playing for several weeks. He missed the rest of that season.
Moving to the Toronto Raptors (2018–2019)
On February 8, 2018, Richardson was traded to the Toronto Raptors. He played his first game with the Raptors just a few days later. Like with the Kings, he also spent time playing for the Raptors' G League team, Raptors 905, to continue improving his game.
In February 2019, Richardson was traded again, this time to the Philadelphia 76ers. However, he was released by the 76ers the very next day.
