Malawian cuisine is all about the yummy foods and cooking styles found in Malawi, a country in southeastern Africa. Two very popular things you'll find are tea and fish. Other important foods that help the country's economy include sugar, coffee, corn, potatoes, and sorghum. Cattle and goats are also raised for food.

Lake Malawi is a huge source of fish for the country. Some popular types of fish caught here include chambo (which is like a bream), usipa (similar to a sardine), mpasa (like salmon), and kampango.

The most important food in Malawi is nsima. It's a thick porridge made from ground corn (maize) flour. People eat nsima for both lunch and dinner. It's usually served with tasty side dishes like meat, beans, or different vegetables.

Popular Malawian Dishes

Besides nsima, Malawi has many other interesting foods and drinks. Here are a few you might find:

Kachumbari: A Fresh Salad

Kachumbari is a fresh and simple salad. It's made mostly from chopped tomatoes and onions. In Malawi, people often call it sumu, shum, or just 'tomato and onion salad'. It's a refreshing side dish.

Thobwa: A Fermented Drink

Thobwa is a special drink that has been fermented. This means it's made by letting ingredients change naturally over time, often with the help of tiny organisms. Thobwa is made from white maize (corn) and either millet or sorghum. It's a traditional and refreshing beverage.

Kondowole: A Sticky Meal

Kondowole is a unique meal made from cassava flour and water. It's mostly eaten in northern Malawi. Kondowole is very sticky and looks a lot like Malawian nsima, Tanzanian ugali, or Ugandan posho. Because of its sticky and tough texture, it often needs a lot of strength to cook. People usually cook it on the floor! Kondowole is often enjoyed with fish. It's not made in large amounts because it's so hard to prepare, so it's not eaten as often as nsima.

Other Tasty Treats

  • Futali is another dish you might find in Malawi.
  • Nthochi is a type of banana bread, a sweet treat made from bananas.

Fish in Malawian Cuisine

Fish is a very important part of the Malawian diet, especially because of Lake Malawi. Many different kinds of fish are caught and eaten. Some popular types include utaka, kapenta, kampango, bombe, Mlamba, Micheni, and Butter fish (also known as Batala). Chambo is perhaps the most famous fish from Lake Malawi and is a favorite for many.
