Étang Malbaie, also known as Malbaie Pond, is a freshwater lake in Quebec, Canada. It's located in a beautiful forest and mountain area. You can find it in the eastern part of Grands-Jardins National Park. The Petite rivière Malbaie flows right through this pond.
You can reach the eastern side of Étang Malbaie by following Quebec Route 381. There's also a smaller forest road along the north shore. This mountain lake is in an area where logging (forestry) has always been very important. However, in the mid-1800s, people started coming here more for fun activities like fishing and boating.
Because it's so high up in the mountains, Étang Malbaie usually freezes over from early December until the end of April. It's generally safe to walk or play on the ice from mid-December to mid-April.

About Malbaie Pond
Étang Malbaie is about 2.3 km (1.4 mi) long and 1.0 km (0.62 mi) wide. It sits at an elevation of 719 m (2,359 ft) above sea level. The pond is surrounded by mountains. For example, Mont René-Richard, which is 995 m (3,264 ft) tall, is only 1.2 km (0.75 mi) to the north. Another mountain, 830 m (2,720 ft) tall, is just 0.5 km (0.31 mi) to the south.
How the Pond is Fed
The pond gets its water mainly from a few sources:
- The Petite rivière Malbaie, which flows in from the north.
- Water flowing out of Lac de la Galette and Lac Rameau.
- Other small streams that aren't named.
Nearby Waterways
Here are some of the main water areas around Malbaie Pond:
- To the east: Lac de la Galette.
- To the south: Pointu Lake and Roche Lake.
- To the west: The Petite rivière Malbaie and the larger Malbaie River.
- To the north: The Petite rivière Malbaie.
Flowing to the Saint Lawrence River
The water leaves Malbaie Pond from its southwest side. From a dam at the pond's exit, the water flows 3.1 km (1.9 mi) down the Petite rivière Malbaie. It then joins the Malbaie River. From there, the water travels a long 123.2 km (76.6 mi) journey along the Malbaie River until it reaches La Malbaie and flows into the mighty Saint Lawrence River.
Naming the Pond
The name "Malbaie Pond" makes sense because it's a pond! This name is connected to other places nearby that also use "Malbaie" in their names. These include Petit lac Malbaie, Petite rivière Malbaie, and the Malbaie River.
A dam was built at the exit of this pond in 1955. The name "Étang Malbaie" first appeared on a government document from the Ministry of Natural Resources in 1973. The official name "Étang Malbaie" was formally recognized on June 6, 1973, by the Commission de toponymie du Québec, which is like the official naming committee for places in Quebec.
