Malcolm Erskine, 17th Earl of Buchan facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Malcolm Harry Erskine, the 17th Earl of Buchan, was an important Scottish landowner. He was born on July 4, 1930, and passed away on September 11, 2022, at 92 years old. He was a member of the House of Lords, which is part of the UK Parliament, from 1984 until 1999.

Malcolm was the younger son of Donald Cardross Flower Erskine, who was the 16th Earl of Buchan. His older brother, David, sadly died when he was very young. This meant that Malcolm became the next in line to inherit his father's titles. He went to a famous school called Eton College.

Becoming an Earl

From 1960 to 1984, Malcolm was known as Lord Cardross. When his father passed away in 1984, Malcolm inherited several important titles. These included the Earl of Buchan (a Scottish title from 1469), Lord Auchterhouse (also Scottish, from 1469), and Lord Cardross (Scottish, from 1610). He also became Baron Erskine of Restormel Castle, which is a title from the United Kingdom.

Public Service and Family Life

In 1972, when he was still Lord Cardross, Malcolm took on some public roles. He became a Justice of the Peace for Westminster. A Justice of the Peace is a volunteer who helps with local court duties, like hearing minor cases. He was also a Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Grocers, which is an old and respected group in London.

On February 21, 1957, Malcolm married Hilary Diana Cecil Power. She was the daughter of Sir Ivan Power, 2nd Baronet. Malcolm and Hilary had four children together:

  • Henry Thomas Alexander Erskine, who was born in 1960 and later became the 18th Earl of Buchan.
  • Lady Seraphina Mary Erskine, born in 1961.
  • Hon. Montagu John Erskine, born in 1966.
  • Lady Arabella Fleur Erskine, born in 1969.

In 2003, Malcolm was living in a place called Newnham House in Newnham, Hampshire.
