Malcolm Wrightson Nance (born 1961) is an American author and expert. He used to be a United States Navy Senior Chief Petty Officer. His special skill was naval cryptology, which means he worked with secret codes and messages.

Nance is known for analyzing intelligence and foreign policy. He often talks about groups that use violence for their beliefs, like al-Qaeda and the Islamic State of Iraq and Levant (ISIS). He also studies how to fight against these groups and unusual ways of warfare.

He learned Arabic and works on national security. This includes fighting terrorism, understanding terrorist plans, and dealing with extreme beliefs. In 2014, he started a "think tank" called the Terror Asymmetrics Project on Strategy, Tactics and Radical Ideologies (TAPSTRI). A think tank is a group that researches and gives advice on important topics.

Military Career and Training

Nance served in the United States Navy for 20 years, from 1981 to 2001. As a specialist in naval cryptology, he worked on many operations. These included fighting terrorism, gathering intelligence, and combat missions. He became very skilled in these areas.

He also taught a special course called Survival, Evasion, Resistance, and Escape (SERE). This training taught Navy and Marine Corps pilots how to survive if they became prisoners of war. Nance helped create a course on how to survive terrorism, abduction, and being held hostage.

Nance was part of several combat operations. He was involved after the 1983 Beirut barracks bombings. He also served during Operation Praying Mantis and the Gulf War. He assisted during an air strike in Banja Luka, Bosnia.

After His Military Service

After leaving the Navy in 2001, Nance started his own company. It was called Special Readiness Services International (SRSI) and provided intelligence support. On September 11, 2001, he saw American Airlines Flight 77 crash into the Pentagon. He was one of the first people to help rescue victims at the crash site.

Later, Nance worked as a security contractor in places like Iraq, Afghanistan, and North Africa. From 2005 to 2007, he taught about fighting terrorism. He lectured at universities in Sydney, Australia, and Wellington, New Zealand.
