The Malcolm X House Site is a special place in North Omaha, Nebraska. It's located at 3448 Pinkney Street. This site marks the very first home of Malcolm X and his family. It was officially recognized as a historic place in 1984. It's also on Nebraska's own list of important heritage sites.

Malcolm X's Early Life in Omaha

Malcolm Little, who later became known as Malcolm X, was born in Omaha, Nebraska. He was born at the University of Nebraska at Omaha Hospital on May 19, 1925. His parents were Earl and Louise Little. Earl Little was a Christian minister. He was also very active in the local community.

Why Malcolm's Family Left Omaha

In his life story, Malcolm X shared that his family moved from Omaha in 1926. They moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin. This move happened because they received threats from a group that promoted hate and prejudice.

Recognizing a Historic Site

The house where Malcolm X was born was taken down in 1965. The owners, the Moore family, did not know about its connection to Malcolm X at that time. Malcolm X became a very important person in American history and culture. To honor his importance, the site was listed on the National Register of Historic Places on March 1, 1984. A special marker was placed there in 1987 to show this recognition.

Efforts to Preserve the Site

A community leader named Rowena Moore worked hard to get the house site recognized. Her father had once lived in the house and owned the property. She wanted to make sure Malcolm X's importance was remembered. Ms. Moore said her family found out about the connection in 1970. Her sister read Malcolm X's autobiography and discovered it. Rowena Moore even hoped to build a museum there one day. She bought more land around the site to help with her plans.

The Malcolm X Foundation Today

Today, the Malcolm X Foundation owns about 10 acres of land at the site. They plan to buy even more land. Their goal is to create a large park. They also want to connect it to Adams Park, which is a city park nearby. In 2008, the foundation started a community garden on six plots of land at the site. This garden helps people in the neighborhood grow their own food.
