Maleme Airport (Greek: Αεροδρόμιο Μάλεμε) is an airport located in Maleme, on the island of Crete, Greece. It has two runways, but they do not have lights. This means planes cannot land or take off at night. The airport is no longer used for regular passenger flights. However, the Chania Aeroclub still uses it for flying activities. The Hellenic Air Force also uses it sometimes as a military airfield.
History of Maleme Airport
Maleme Airport was once the main public airport for the city of Chania. It served this purpose until 1959. Even today, the Hellenic Air Force uses the airport for some military operations.
Maleme Airport in World War II
Maleme Airport played a very important role during World War II. In May 1941, a major battle called the Battle of Crete took place here. During this battle, many German paratroopers and mountain troops landed at Maleme Airport. They arrived by parachute and gliders as part of a large invasion. This event made Maleme Airport a famous historical site.
