Malemort-du-Comtat is a small village, also known as a commune, located in the south of France. It is found in the beautiful Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region, within the Vaucluse department. In 1999, about 1,200 people lived there. This historic place has a rich past, dating back to Roman times.
A Glimpse into History
During the time of the Roman Empire, this village was known by a different name: "Calvia." The name "Malemort" means "bad death" in French. It is thought that this name came about after the village was destroyed by a group called the Franks a long time ago. "Comtat" means "county," which refers to land that belonged to a count.
Wine has been made in this area for a very long time, over 2,400 years! In the Middle Ages, wine making started again. In the year 882, the Archbishop of Carpentras gave his monks a vineyard in Malemort-du-Comtat.
Exploring the Village
The village is nestled in the mountains. It is surrounded by many olive and cherry trees. Long ago, the village was protected by strong, high walls. These walls had eleven towers, which were built in the 12th century.
Today, three of the original gateways in the wall are still standing. The village church, named Notre Dame de l’Assomption, was built in the 13th century. It is an important part of the village's history and charm.
