Early Life and Music
Malick Koly grew up in many different places. He lived in Africa, Europe, and North America. He was born in Abidjan. His family comes from Guinea and Mali.
Malick started learning music when he was very young. His mother, Awa Sangho, is a famous singer from Mali. She was even nominated for a Grammy Award. His father, Souleymane Koly, was a playwright and producer from Guinea and France.
Later, Malick moved to the United States when he was in high school. He started playing drums for other famous musicians. These included Wallace Roney, Charnett Moffett, and Charles Tolliver. This is what it means to be a "sideman" – playing music with other artists.
