Malinxalchitl was a powerful Nahua queen who ruled the area of Tzacoalco. Her name means "beautiful flower of evil." She was queen during a very important time in history: the Conquest of Mexico. She passed away around the year 1524.
Queen Malinxalchitl's Story
The Spanish Arrive
In 1524, a Spanish leader named Francisco Cortés de San Buenaventura came to Tzacoalco. At first, he found it hard to control the people living there. Later, some religious leaders called Franciscan friars helped to persuade them.
A New Town is Formed
Many of the original people of Tzacoalco had left and moved to a place called Sayula. Because of this, another Spanish leader, Juan de Escárena, decided to create a new town. This new town is what we know today as Zacoalco de Torres.
He brought in families from the Méxica and Otomí groups to live there. Twelve Spanish soldiers were also placed in the town. Their job was to protect Queen Malinxalchitl.
Her Final Days
Sadly, Queen Malinxalchitl's life ended in 1524. She was killed by an arrow that hit her heart. Some people believe this happened because she had formed an alliance with the Spanish. This alliance might have made some local people unhappy.
