Malte Brun is a very tall mountain in New Zealand. It's the highest point in the Malte Brun Range. This mountain range sits between two large glaciers, the Tasman Glacier and the Murchison Glacier. Malte Brun is part of the Southern Alps, a big mountain chain in New Zealand.

The mountain is about 3,199 meters (10,495 feet) high. This makes it one of the tallest mountains in New Zealand. In fact, the New Zealand Alpine Club says it's the third highest mountain in the country!

Malte Brun was named by Julius von Haast. He was an explorer who named it after a French geographer named Victor Adolphe Malte-Brun.

Climbing Malte Brun

Climbing Malte Brun is a big challenge. The first person to reach the top was Tom Fyfe. He climbed it by himself in March 1894. He went up the North Face of the mountain.

Climbing Routes

Today, there are many ways to climb Malte Brun. All of these routes need special climbing skills and equipment. This means only experienced climbers should try them.

One popular way to climb is called the West Ridge. This route includes a tricky part known as the "Cheval." The Cheval is a very narrow, sharp ridge. Climbers have to carefully balance and move across it.

Other important climbing routes on Malte Brun include:

  • West Ridge (NZ Alpine grade 3+)
  • South Ridge (NZ Alpine Grade 3)
  • South Face (NZ Alpine Grades 4 – 4+)

Climber Huts

In the past, there were two small huts for climbers near Malte Brun. These huts offered a place to rest. One was called The Beetham Hut. It was in the Beetham Valley. The other was the Malte Brun Hut. It was located above the Tasman Glacier.

Sadly, The Beetham Hut was destroyed by an Avalanche in the early 1990s.
