Early Life and How She Started
María Luisa Trevejo was born in Havana, Cuba, on October 15, 2002. Her mother is Cuban, and her father is Spanish. When she was a baby, Malú moved to Madrid, Spain, with her mother. She lived there with her father for 12 years.
While in Spain, Malú loved acting. She made short skit videos with her friends, and her parents recorded them. She also started belly dancing when she was very young. She put videos of her dancing online, and this was how people first started to notice her. When she was 13, she moved to Miami, Florida, with her mother.
Soon after moving, Malú created an account on Musical.ly. This app is now called TikTok. She quickly gained millions of followers by posting videos where she would lip-sync to songs. She became a verified user, which means her account was officially recognized.
When Malú was 14, she signed a recording deal with In-Tu Linea and Universal Music Latin. This was a big step for her music career. On September 22, 2017, she released her first song, "Luna Llena". This song quickly became very popular, getting over 129 million views on YouTube.
Her Music Career
Malú Trevejo's first song, "Luna Llena", was released on September 22, 2017. It was produced by a group called the Fliptones. The song gained 33 million views on YouTube in just seven weeks! Because of her success, Pandora Radio named Malú as one of their "Latin Artists to Watch" in 2018.
Malú shared that her music would be a mix of Spanish and English songs, known as Spanglish. In June 2017, she officially joined In-Tu Linea and Universal Music Latin. "Luna Llena" even made it onto the Billboard Hot Latin Songs chart, reaching number 27. An English version of the song, called "Luna Llena (English Version)", was also released for people who don't speak Spanish.
On August 2, 2019, Malú released a short album called Una Vez Más. Her song "Luna Llena" was very successful, reaching number 18 on the Hot Latin Songs chart. It also earned gold and platinum awards in just one month.
In October 2020, Malú started working with new managers and moved to the Los Angeles area. A year later, in October 2021, she announced on social media that she had signed with rapper Travis Scott's record label, Cactus Jack Records, and Atlantic Records. She then released a new song called "Complicado" with another artist named Luar La L. This song came out under Cactus Jack and Atlantic. However, in November 2021, she left Cactus Jack Records.
