Malvern is a small, quiet community located in Oneida County, Wisconsin, United States. It is an unincorporated community, which means it's a group of homes and businesses that are not officially part of a larger town or city government. Malvern is found about 6.5 miles (10.5 kilometers) east-southeast of Rhinelander.

Malvern's Early History

Malvern began to grow sometime after October 1882. This was when a special train track, called a spur, was built. This track connected Monico to Rhinelander.

Railroad Days

In June 1893, a different company, the Chicago and North Western Railway, bought this train line. Around that time, a train stop was built in Malvern. It had a raised platform for people to get on and off trains. This stop was just east of where North Pelican Lake Road is today.

Besides the main train line, there were also smaller tracks in Malvern. These were called logging rail spurs or landings. They were used to move logs from the forests. Several logging camps were also set up in the area.

Community Life and Schools

As the community grew, people built homes in Malvern. There was even a tavern, which is like a restaurant or pub. The old foundations of these buildings can still be seen today.

A one room school house was built close to the train stop. As more families moved to Malvern, a bigger school was needed. This larger school was built where Haymeadow Creek meets the old Highway 14 (now Haymeadow Road).

It was named the Wayside School by the Rhinelander school district. Later, this school building was moved closer to Rhinelander. It became the Pelican elementary school. You can still see the old building along County Highway P, near the current Pelican school complex.

First Settlers and a Post Office

One of the first people to settle in Malvern was Mr. Louis C. Miller. In 1898, he got land in the area through the Federal Homestead Act. This act allowed people to claim government land if they lived on it and improved it.

Mr. Miller's cabin was located south of the old wagon road, which was south of the railroad tracks. He cleared about 25 acres of land. You can still find the spot where his cabin stood and piles of rocks from his land clearing today.

Malvern even had its own post office for a few years. It opened in 1902 and closed in 1906. The name "Malvern" was chosen to remember a famous battle from the American Civil War, the Battle of Malvern Hill in Virginia.
